In an Asian world, where North Korea and some Islamic republics like Iran have raised the flag of the nuclear belicism. The 65th anniversary of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear bombings reminds that, if no war brings anything but grieve, it is specially true in the case of the two US nuclear bombings over Japan, whose devastating effects are still patent today in the people who survived and their descendants.
``…now is the time — the time to invest in peace. Last year, military spending exceeded $1.5 trillion — more than ¥133 trillion. Meanwhile, investments in people and in peace are put on hold. The world is overarmed. Peace is underfunded``, remarked UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon at the welcome ceremony by Hiroshima citizens, on 6th August.
``When nuclear weapons are used, there are no bystanders. In the fight to abolish nuclear weapons, there must be no bystanders. Everyone gains. Everyone must be involved. Or else, everyone loses``, underscored Ban.
He is the first UN Secretary-General to attend the annual Peace Ceremony which commemorates the 1945 atomic bombing of that city. This is also the first time that a US official representative attends this ceremony and that the US Government apologizes by both nuclear bombings.
The monsoon has gone mad in Asia. Mortality in Moscow has more than doubled by the hot weather and the smog from the wild fires around the capital of Russia. Now there comes the rain, but experts don't expect that will be enough to extinguish te flames and avoid the ashes to polute Moscow again if the wind changes direction.
Nobody dares to blame for the heavy rains in the North of India, Pakistan and South of China on the climate change, but some experts assure that this is the most persistent and wild monsoon in ages. They also say that the rise in rains during the monsoon season could be an evidence of something is changing in the nevironmental balance in South and East Asia.
Perhaps because the economic development, and not only in emerging countries, but also in western nations has boosted up the green house gas emmisions?.
The heat wave that have been drying Russia in August is said to be the hardest in 130 years.
Thirty to 40 degrees or more for a population not used to bear such haze.
It adds to the temperature the widespread wild fires across the country. And nobody knows how they were caused.
The flames still were besieging Moscow last Friday. The rain fallen on Monday 16th has pushed down temperature, but not extinguished the fire rim.
Leaving aside human victims, the loss of farming land and crops in Russia could result in food inflation, if wheat exports are banned by the Kremlin also during 2011.
In Asia the wild monsoon not only has killed millions of human beings, but also has destroyed all the advanced and even more. People must start off again, rebuilding all the already achieved, instead of building on.
Which development process can bear the ballast of a never ending start off?.
Mankind is not paying respect to the envirnonment and the environment is billing us.
But as it usually happens, and this was clearly underscored by the Nobel Prize, Rajendra Pachauri in November 2009 in Madrid, this bill is being paid by the poorest.
